ECLAC Seminar Evaluates Vulnerability of Rural Poor to Climate Change Impacts

November 22 - At the seminar Agriculture and Climate Change: Innovation, Policies and Institutes, the Economic Commission for Latin American and the Caribbean (ECLAC) was warned of the potentially large impact climate change could have on the poor in the region and the urgency with which adaptation should be pursued. Emphasizing the vulnerable position of the poor who reside in tropical areas and are also highly dependent on agriculture, experts discussed the need for adaptation to become a larger priority in the public policy agenda. In the agriculture and livestock sectors in particular, this has received little attention. Improved agricultural practices, especially in poor regions, could prevent other widespread crises and should be viewed as an opportunity. More...
